Self Care and Why It’s Important
Our daily lives can easily pull us in so many different directions. If we don’t fully understand the value of self care and why it’s important, we will quickly find ourselves stressed out and unfulfilled. Self care impacts a person physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Super Mom Status
When I became a mom, I felt this need to be 100% into my children-focusing solely on them. Had major “super mom” thinking. Along with this pressure to do EVERYTHING right.
I CRINGE looking back and thinking about how I used to be. I literally did EVERYTHING in my home. Meals, cleaning, kids, laundry, shopping, bills etc. How I managed all of it I have no idea but what I was failing to see was the damage it was creating in my life.
Don’t get me wrong, being selfless is a beautiful gift. A giving act of love. BUT putting yourself last always has negative impacts on the mind, body, and spirit.

Mommy Zombie
I remember the day when someone asked me what my hobbies were and I couldn’t even answer it. I had no personal interests or hobbies of my own. Everything I did revolved around my husband and kid’s happiness. I rarely took any time for myself and when I did, felt this weird guilt about it.
For 8 years, I never left my children. No girls trips, nothing! My first trip away was with a great group of gals from Nashville to run 26.2miles in Chicago (in 2013). I will never forget the look on the ladies faces when I told them that was my first trip away from my kids. They inspired me to start changing that.
YOU are a Priority
Making the time to do the things you find joy in is not only healthy but vital to your well being. When you take the time to create inner balance it will impact all the other areas in your life as well.
Ways you can do this:
You can start by picking up a hobby, volunteering, being a part of a group, healthy eating, being active, reducing stress and learning healthy coping skills to help keep your body balanced.
Start Self-Care
No matter what stage you are in (young, old, single, dating, married, kids, no kids etc) it’s vital to develop healthy habits that will benefit you physically, emotionally and mentally. The great part of self care is that it really is easy to incorporate it into your life.
It really comes down to just starting and shifting your thinking. Start small. A 10 minute walk, a quiet cup of coffee, reading a magazine/book, or journaling. Pick one thing that fills you with an inner peace/calm and do it every day. You will notice, over time, self-care will become a normal part of your everyday life.
Laundry and cleaning can wait. And take-out is never a bad option. Just saying 😉
Much Love,
