What To Know About Hand Tied Weft Extensions

In the last few years, I have been going through some health issues. These issues have lead to changes to the quality of my hair. Specifically, the back of my hair. It has become brittle, breaks easily, and isn’t as full as it used to be. To compensate for that, I would use a single clip-in extension on the lower back of my head. The small amount of additional hair made a huge difference to the overall look of my hair. It helped me forget what was going on with my health. The single clip in extension also made me feel like I had a little bit power over something I was powerless over.

A few months ago, I met Danielle and shared with her what was happening with my hair. She suggested that I try Harper Ellis hand tied weft hair extensions. She recommended doing one row of the hand tied extensions and that would help add a little length and fullness to my hair.

Will I cut my hair short at some point, probably. But for now, I’m not ready for that. So I did some research and after two months I decided I wanted to give hand tied extensions a try!

What To Know About Hand Tied Weft Extensions

A trained stylist, like Danielle, will schedule you for an initial consultation. This is when he/she will exam your hair and scalp to ensure you are a good candidate for the hand tied extensions. During this consultation you will also go over color selection, length, and your particular hair goals. This appointment is a great time to ask any questions you may have before deciding on any thing.

How Are Hand Tied Weft Extensions Applied?

The stylist sections your hair and then creates a micro-bead track on your head using your natural hair. This micro-bead track will be used to support the wefts of hair. Which helps distribute the weight of weft throughout the track. That weft hair is then sewn securely onto the track. I went with this particular extension because there would be no tape, glue, braids, heat, or solvents used to apply them. Which means less potential for my natural hair to get damaged.

Do Hand Tied Extensions Hurt During The Application Process?

You may feel a tug here and there but you shouldn’t experience any pain. There may also be an adjustment period after you have your extensions installed for the first time. You do have something foreign on your scalp so it may feel weird at first. Most common things you may experience are tightness on the scalp, headache, itchy scalp where the track lies, and may take some time to get use to sleeping with them on your head.

Why Harper Ellis Hand Tied Weft Extensions?

I went with this brand for these reasons:

  • Hand tied weft extensions give a more natural look
  • Harper Ellis offered various lengths and colors in hair selection
  • High quality hair that is long lasting with proper care and maintenance
  • Minimal damage to natural hair and I wouldn’t have to worry about wearing a clip in anymore

Can I Style My Hand Tied Weft Extensions?

YES! You can use a flat iron, curling iron, and blow dryer to style your extensions like you normally would. Only difference is that you will need to be more careful with tugging at the hair. Its recommended that you hold the base of your scalp where your extensions are attached to your natural hair.

How To Care For Hand Tied Weft Extensions?

The best care tips for these types of extensions are:

  • Use sulfate and paraben free products for your hair
  • Use a leave in conditioner to keep extension ends hydrated so that they don’t dry out
  • Brush hair daily with a brush designed for extensions
  • Brush your hair before you shower to minimize tangling and breakage
  • NEVER go to bed with wet hair
  • Wear your hair in a braid or low ponytail when you go to bed. I like using these silk scrunchies.
  • Sleep on a silk pillow case
  • You will also need to schedule an appointment with your stylist every 4-8weeks to move extensions up

Can I Swim With Hand Tied Weft Extensions?

Yes, you can go swimming. BUT its VERY important you brush your hair, put a leave in conditioner into your hair, and also braid before going into a pool, lake, or ocean. It’s also important to rinse the hair off immediately after getting out to avoid possible damage to the hair.

Overall, if you feel that you may want to give this try you can find someone by you or you can schedule a consultation with my stylist who can help you. Schedule a consultation with Danielle here.

  1. Your hair looks fabulous. I know this is a fairly pricy investment, though worth every penny. I’ve been on the fence about trying extensions (I’d like to try them because I am experiencing considerable hair loss due to stress, and also breakage — my hair grows but it is always the same length, due to breakage). The reason I am on the fence is because the few people I know who got them. complained of scalp itching and that would drive me nuts.

    1. So sorry you are going through some hair stuff too. It’s frustrating and challenging 🙁 .Yes, extensions are an investment and do require some maintenance. I really like how they create fullness but I don’t think they are for everyone.
